Governance & Accountability
Volunteer Code of Conduct
Every volunteer represents Christ, this mission, and the community hosting us. This code defines the standard we hold one another to.
1. Our standard
Volunteers serve with humility, patience, and honesty. We are guests in Cap-Haïtien, working under Haitian leadership and alongside Haitian partners, and our conduct should make it easier — never harder — for local churches and clinics to continue after we leave.
2. Respect for people served
- Treat every patient, student, family, and coworker with dignity, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or circumstance
- Ask before photographing anyone; never photograph patients, treatment, or children without explicit permission
- Never hand out money, gifts, or personal items directly to individuals outside the organized distribution plan
- Do not make promises about future help, sponsorship, visas, or personal support
- Protect the privacy of medical, family, and student information
3. Team conduct
- Follow the instructions of team leaders, the Haiti country coordinator, and security staff without argument in the moment
- Stay with your assigned team; never leave the lodging or worksite alone or without authorization
- Keep to the published schedule, including departure times, devotions, and debriefs
- Resolve disagreements privately and respectfully; do not air conflict in front of the community
- Dress modestly and appropriately for clinical, church, school, and community settings
4. Scope of practice
Medical, dental, nursing, counseling, and allied health volunteers may work only within their licensure, training, and the scope authorized for the mission. Non-clinical volunteers may not provide clinical care, dispense medication, or give medical advice under any circumstance.
5. Substances, relationships, and weapons
- No illegal drugs at any point during the mission
- No alcohol during mission activities or at mission lodging
- No romantic or sexual conduct with community members, patients, students, or minors — this is absolute and non-negotiable
- No firearms or weapons carried by volunteers
6. Children and vulnerable persons
All volunteers must follow the Child Protection Policy, including the two-adult rule, approved-area contact only, and immediate reporting of any concern. Interaction with children is a privilege granted under supervision, not a personal arrangement.
7. Social media and storytelling
- Do not post images of patients, treatment, or identifiable children
- Do not post location details, security arrangements, or team movements in real time
- Represent the community with dignity — avoid language or imagery that reduces people to their poverty
- Do not speak for UnityReach Global on media inquiries; refer them to mission leadership
8. Safety and health
Volunteers follow all safety, water, food, transportation, and curfew rules, disclose relevant medical conditions and medications to mission leadership in advance, and report injuries or illness immediately.
9. Reporting concerns
Report any safety concern, misconduct, or suspected abuse immediately to a team leader and to info@unityreachglobal.org or 954-554-0525. Reports made in good faith are protected from retaliation.
10. Accountability
Violations may result in reassignment, removal from mission activities, being sent home at the volunteer's own expense, exclusion from future missions, and referral to authorities where the law requires it. Mission contributions are not refunded when a volunteer is removed for misconduct.
This code is signed as part of the mission participation agreement. Full participation terms are set out in the Volunteer Terms.
