The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring all safety, security, emergency preparedness, and risk management programs for UnityReach Global. The department ensures the safety of volunteers, staff, beneficiaries, visitors, and organizational assets before, during, and after every mission.
The Safety Officer works closely with the Mission Director, Medical Director, Logistics Director, Volunteer Director, and local authorities to identify risks, respond to emergencies, and maintain a safe operating environment.

Core Responsibilities
Before the Mission
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments
- Develop emergency response and evacuation plans
- Perform safety inspections of all mission locations
- Coordinate with police, fire, EMS, hospitals, and local authorities
- Train volunteers in safety procedures, emergency communications, and safeguarding
- Inspect vehicles, facilities, and emergency equipment
- Prepare emergency contact lists and incident reporting procedures
During the Mission
- Monitor safety and security at all mission sites
- Conduct daily safety briefings
- Coordinate emergency responses and medical evacuations when necessary
- Monitor transportation safety and crowd management
- Investigate and document incidents
- Ensure child protection and safeguarding procedures are followed
- Maintain communication with local emergency services
After the Mission
- Complete incident reviews and after-action reports
- Evaluate emergency response performance
- Reconcile emergency equipment and supplies
- Update safety policies based on lessons learned
- Provide recommendations to leadership for future missions
- Prepare a comprehensive safety and risk management report for the Board and executive leadership
- This structure creates a Safety & Security Department of approximately 60–75 staff members and volunteers, capable of supporting a 100–200 volunteer international humanitarian mission by providing comprehensive risk management, emergency preparedness, security operations, safeguarding, transportation safety, and incident response
